Bernhard J Suess
Bio and Resume
I graduated from Lehigh University.
I worked professionally in photography from 1978 until 2005. I am primarily self-taught. From 1986 until 2000 I taught college level photography courses.
I taught traditional photography photography at Northampton Community College, Bethlehem, PA; Lafayette College, Easton, PA; and Allentown College (now DeSales University), Center Valley, PA. In addition, I instructed digital photography for the Center for Business and Industry at Northampton and Photoshop for the Web for Penn State University, Lehigh Valley Campus.
I have had articles published dealing with technical aspects of black-and-white photography. A series of articles dealing with printing using variable contrast paper was published in 1991 and 1992 issues of
Darkroom and Creative Camera Techniques (now called
Photo Techniques). Another series of five articles concerning camera filters was published in 1994. I also wrote several articles for
IMAGEBase, a publication about digital imaging.
My articles have also been published in Ilford Photo's Ilfopro newsletter and their Instructor's Newsletter, in Luminos Photo's Printmaker's Guild newsletter, The Imagemaker, and in JOBO Fototechnic's newsletter, JQ - JOBO Quarterly.
My book, Mastering Black-and-White Photography: From Camera to Darkroom, was published in January 1995 by Allworth Press (New York City). It is currently in its fourth printing. My second book for Allworth, Creative Black-and-White Photography: Advanced Camera and Darkroom Techniques was published in June 1998 and is in its second printing.
My photographs have been exhibited at Lehigh University (one-man show, 1986); Allentown Art Museum (Pennsylvania Photographers show, 1987); the Limelight in New York City (1988); Lafayette College (faculty show, 1991); and The Gallery at State Theatre (Art 4 Giving, 1991). I have had work in several Northampton Community College faculty shows (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996). A one-man show, A Sense of Scale, was held (March 1992) at The Gallery at State Theatre. Several of my photographs were in the Light of Bethlehem show (May 1992), celebrating the city's 250th anniversary. I had several photographs included in the Corridor '95 show - Afa Gallery; Scranton, PA (May to June 1995); The Art Exchange, Union Dale, PA (June to July 1995); The Golden Door Gallery, New Hope, PA (July to August 1995); and Hazleton Art League, Hazleton, PA (August 1995). Several photos were included in the 4th Annual Phillips Mill Photographic Exhibition in New Hope, PA (May - June 1996). A one-man show was held at the Multiple Choice Gallery at Montgomery County Community College in November and December 1997.
In August 1992, I received a grant from the City of Easton to photograph the city and surrounding area. The work was presented to the city in May 1993.
